Wine / Beer Tasting Notes

Friday, December 9th 2022 4:30pm-7:30pm - Dennis from Black Ankle Vineyards

2021 Barrel-Fermented Viognier – Bottling Date: April 2022. 100% Viognier.  294 cases produced.  The 2021 Barrel-Fermented Viognier is an easy, light-bodied wine that shows richness and a bit of oomph. Its aromas are heady with lovely floral, perfumed notes. The wine's creamy nature is heightened by notes of pineapple, apricot, citrus zest, mineral, toast, and almond as it culminates with a lingering finish.

2021 Passeggiata – Bottling Date: April 2022. 1040 cases produced.  A medium-bodied red blend that is anything but simple despite its easy drinking nature. It's made to be a "go-to" wine that is good on its own or with just about anything. There's lots of red and dark fruit flavors that meld with vanilla, sweet wood, and baking spice before heading to a nice finish showing pepper spice.

2020 Viento – Harvest Date: October 8- 20. Aging: 18 months in oak barrels; 38% new, 62% used
Bottling Date: May 2022. 390 cases produced. Blend: 87% Cabernet Franc, 13% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied 2020 Viento could have been bottled with a Cabernet Franc label, as it is mostly Cabernet Franc. There’s plenty of dark fruit (cherry and plum), vanilla, butterscotch, tobacco, and pepper spice notes – with a hint of roasted chili pepper thrown in “to boot." The wine has juicy acidity and a lingering dry finish.

2020 Crumbling Rock – Appellation: Frederick County. Harvest Date: September 21 - October 3.
Aging: 18 months in oak barrels; 75% new, 25% used. 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot. 1400 cases produced.  The mouthfeel is bold and rich, yet elegant and smooth, swirling with flavors and aromas of dark berries, cherry, plum, tobacco, pepper spice, and vanilla, finishing long with a linger that entices us to savor every sip.

Terra Dulce IX – Bottling Date: October 2021. Residual Sugar: 9.8%. Alcohol %19. 300 cases produced. Port-style blend. Smooth, easy drinking sweet wine that would be perfect either before or after dinner. The sugar and alcohol are so nicely balanced that neither prevail over the other. There is no cloying feel on the palate, rather the wine has a rich, juicy feel to it. Terra Dulce IX shows oxidized aromas similar to a Sherry. Aromas and flavors of raisins, dates, fig, almond, toffee, tobacco and cocoa arise then segue into a long, lingering warm finish. Warm and toasty on the palate, great with an after-dinner cheese plate, or chocolate, this port-style wine is also a treat on its own.

Dominique et Janine Crochet 2021 Sancerre, Loire France – When I learned about the major shortages heading our way regarding Sancerre, I took the opportunity to stock up. The 2021 Sancerre harvest suffered early spring frost, mildew outbreaks and hail resulting in 50% plus decline in grape yields. This, along with the worldwide shipping issues and shortage of glass, cork, and paper. That said….so excited to share this Sancerre gem with you. Super intense aromatics with crisp stone fruits, Asian pear, and that signature Bue minerality streak. Vibrant fruit and acidity with tremendous balance and depth. It’s a Sancerre that is only going to get better over the next couple of years.

"This is the entry-level wine of Cuatro Gatos Locos and it's 100% Malbec from the Gualtallary zone, a high-altitude location more than 1,300 meters above sea level in the Uco Valley. It has the succulence and voluptuousness of a Gualtallary Malbec, with the exuberant flavors of red fruits and violets in a pleasing body with round and juicy tannins…"

Alain Jaume Grand Veneur Les Champuvins 2019 Côtes du Rhône, Rhone France – 92 Points and Editors Choice – Wine Enthusiast. “Les Champauvins” stretches on 34 ha classified in Côtes du Rhône. The plots are located in the northern border of Châteauneuf du Pape, exactly from 3 meters outside the appellation. It is in the lieux dits of "Champauvins" and "Coudoulet."Sourced from a plot just a stone's throw from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Les Champauvins is consistently one of the best Côtes-du-Rhône bottlings available. Heady aromas of lilac and crushed white pepper introduce a palate that's powerful yet pure in fruit, packed with flavors of candied raspberry and strawberry leather.
