Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Voltes White – Voltes is a blend of two native grape varieties: Roditis and Moschofilero. The Roditis grapes are grown in selected vineyards in the region of Achaia, in semi-mountainous terrain. The variety is late-ripening and suited to a Mediterranean climate. Wines made from Roditis are terroir-driven; the character of the grapes is strongly influenced by where they are grown. At this higher altitude, there is a significant diurnal temperature shift and poor, well-drained soils, resulting in complex wines with natural acidity. The pink skinned, aromatic Moschofilero grapes are from selected vineyards in the plateau of Mantineia in Arcadia. The cool micro-climates of both regions, combined with the characteristics of both varieties, contribute to the freshness and aromatic nature of this blend. The grapes are hand-harvested. Pale lemon in color, this smooth and refreshing blend of native Greek varieties offers aromas of freshly cut flowers, green apple, and juicy stone fruit. Textured on the palate, with a touch of minerality on the finish.
Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Assyrtiko – Protected Geographical Indication Laconia 100% Assyrtiko. A variety that is truly a jewel. Each year of vine growing, organically and with minimum intervention, transcends expectations and shows the deep bond between Monemvasia and Assyrtiko. White vinification in a stainless-steel tank, fermented at a controlled temperature of up to 18 0 C and maturing for six months on the fine lees with periodic stirring. My nose and mouth with a lot of citrusy zest: elements of grapefruit, orange, lime juice, as well as nectarine, unripe kiwi, a bit of saltiness and some distinct minerality. The extended maturation on fine lees adds some depth and complexity with notes of baked bread and some unctuosity in excellent harmony with the typically high acidity.
Monemvasia Winery Tsimbidi Voltes Red – Voltes is a blend of two native grape varieties: Agiorgitiko and Mavroudi. Both varieties are grown in Laconia, near Monemvasia, where the climate is warm and dry. The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 200 meters above sea-level, which offers cooler nights, resulting in balancing natural freshness. The vines are planted in clay-loam soils; the clay component has good water retention properties helping to nourish the vines during the warm, dry growth period. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimum maturity. A light bodied and fresh blend of two native varieties, which offer ample notes of ripe red fruits with a hint of sweet spice.
Domaine Zafeirakis – Nestled in the foothills of Mt. Olympus, Christos Zafeirakis operates one of Thessaly's newest wineries, as well as its first certified-organic one. A 4th generation winemaker in the region, Christos spent a good amount of time abroad, learning how to make wine in Milan, followed by stints in Piedmont, Alto Adige, and Tuscany, but his passion has always been for his homeland's unique, ancient varieties. He's credited for bringing one back from nearly the verge of extinction: Limniona, a high-acid grape used in some favorite Greek reds.
